BRITISH AIRWAYS AND HESTON BLUMENTHAL - FLAVOUR AT 30,000 FEETNot many chefs dare face the challenge of serving food for 100,000 customers a day at 30,000 feet, so when Heston Blumenthal asked Taste of London headline sponsor British Airways if he could try it, the airline jumped at the opportunity.
Heston employed his culinary brilliance and customary inquisitiveness to reimagine plane food from the ground-up. He had a lot to do: despite the careful preparation and technical expertise that goes into the meals served up at altitude, passengers are often confronted with dishes that are underwhelming - in taste and appearance. Heston investigates the science behind eating under (cabin) pressure and the case of the misbehaving taste buds, before attempting to come up with a menu that looks and tastes great, and breaks the tedium of travel - all from the confines of a tiny aircraft galley.
Can a meal taste as good in the air as it does on the ground? Ultimately the passengers will decide, but if Heston's endeavours prove successful, British Airways customers will be in for a treat.
Catch Heston Bluementhal with British Airways in Heston's Mission Impossible - Tuesday 8th March at 9pm on Channel 4.
